Google Analytics

To measure results of redesign we need to create a status report of current website and compare it with new website. I will be using Google Analytics to track this changes.

Locating Top Content

Today I will be starting with my most vieved page in whole website. In analytics go to Content > Top Content and you will see what your most visited pages are.

Here is a screenshot of my Top viewed page on Easy Site Guide. Surprisingly it is not a home page as many people would think. What you can see from this image is Top visited page is called “How to change Joomla Favicon“. This page was vieved 2433 times in one month (Sept 12th – Oct 12th 2009), average time on page is 2:35, bounce rate is 65% and exit rate is 67%.

Interpreting Analytics Data

Figures above tell us that over 2000 people visited this page, they stayed on this page for 2 and half minutes and then almost 70% left EasySiteGuide.com immediately and did not look at even one more page. This is not good. I want people to stick around and look for other information on EasySiteGuide.com.

Finding reasons

Obvious reason for such a big bounce and exit rate is that page is outdated. At the time I wrote the article Joomla version was 1.0 and today it is 1.5. So people are looking for information how to change Joomla Favicon for the new, 1.5 version and they left the site when they find out the tutorial is not working for them. We are going to change this.

Setting Goals

My primary goal is to lower the bounce and exit rate to 20% and invite people to look for more information on my website. Secondary goal is to successfully monetize traffic on this page.

To accomplish my primary goal I will rewrite the article to comply with the newest Joomla version and to accomplish the second one, I will insert a relevant advertisement to my target audience.

I will let you know what the results are!

Ongoning project

This will be the basis of redesigning content of Easy Site Guide. It takes a lot of time, but it is the best way to get good results. Some of the content will be rewritten, some deleted and there will be plenty of new, fresh information you will be able to apply to your websites. After this stage is completed, we will recode the core of website and redesign. So lot of exciting weeks in front of us!
